The Television Production class at Oviedo High started in 1989 with the production of a video yearbook. A studio was added to the school campus in 1995 and "ROAR TV" broadcasted its first episode to the school on October 16, 1995.
In the 2000s, we became a member of the Florida Scholastic Press Association. Our program made a big splash at the 2009 statewide convention where we placed in six statewide contests. Over the next couple years we had multiple short films pick up awards at a variety of festivals and competitions, including "A Drop of Summer" directed by Allison Tate. Not only was it the first high school film selected for the local Film Slam at the Enzian Theatre but it won first place at the competition. It also won Best Student Film at the Texas Film Festival. This film was monumental as being a major leap forward in the quality of work from our program. In 2013, we became members of the Student Television Network and traveled to the national convention in Los Angeles, California. We won our first "Best of the Best" for a student profile package in the first rendition of the Florida Scholastic Press Spring Digitals. The producer of that package, Rachel Wang, went on to become the State Chairperson at the 2015 Florida Scholastic Press Convention. We picked up our first national award from the Student Television Network in the Mobile App category at the 2015 Convention in San Diego, California. From there we got the ball rolling, winning a Regional Broadcast Excellence Award in 2016 and Film Excellence Awards in 2017 and 2018. We became an FSPA All-Florida Broadcast and NSPA Broadcast Pacemaker Winner for the first time in 2017. In 9 years time, we have accumulated over 50 major national awards. Four of our previous students have been named statewide finalists for Broadcast Journalist of the Year, two of which were also national finalists. William Deem was the 2022 statewide winner and Kaylin Herbet was a 2023 national winner. Our goal is produce the very best broadcast we can for our school campus. We hope to give our teachers and students a product they are intrigued to tune into each and every morning. Every so often we aim to produce specialty broadcasts themed around certain events or places. Recently, we've branched into two new products: the Mane Minute and Monthly Mane, intended to give a glance of the most pertinent information for a given day (Mane Minute) or a recap of the most noteworthy news in a given month (Monthly Mane). Our filmmaking class, Digital Lion Productions, is geared towards telling stories in a narrative format. This gives our students a chance to focus on projects that take up more time and focus than our broadcast class often permits. As we move through the early part of the 2020's, WROR-TV is committed to telling stories that matter to the student body of Oviedo High School. Our program offers our students the chance to find a voice for themselves while they get hands-on experience with the production process. Some of our students even travel to state and national conventions. We've grown quite a bit over the past 25+ and look forward to what the next 25+ years has in store. |
